Beyond gaming,Virtual world is everywhere now!!.New and  immersive experiences are created and explored while navigating through 3d and 2d virtual spaces.I was exploring through this domain while researching on how to enhance navigation in 3d architectural models especially pertaining to residential spaces. These have wide applications in fields like real estate, design visualizations, architectural consultancy etc. Here , I am focusing on easier and hurdle free navigation and visualization for layman through 3d spaces.

Architectural 3d BIM software's like Archi CAD, auto desk Revit are very good visualizing platforms for professionals with multiple control elements ,but they are not intended for the common visualizer.Along with them ,real time rendering softwares like lumion, lumen rt  gives easy and smooth visualizations with opportunities to make walkthroughs, animations, flythroughs. The software itself can transform as an interactive visualization ahead of its rendering capabilities with minimum learning. The power on the design elements if controlled to the right extent can help the user explore the various possibilities of the area he want to work or reside in.

Architectural visualization in Lumion

This video shows the ease in which one can export a crude model and add/ give realistic effects to objects and finally compose a walk through of the model.

'Don't share models, deliver experiences'.Importance of different and redundant navigation techniques
are essential for the wide variety of users and some of those methods available in LumenRT, are shown in the above video.

Going one more step ahead, visualizers make the experience realistic by using virtual reality. When architecture is combined with oculus and vr , new possibilities emerge for the designer and the viewer. While the designer can easily export his prototypes from sketchup or revit to virtual reality through game engines like Unity 3d or Unreal engine to be client tested, the end users can feel the space and give their suggestions.

Autodesk Revit to virtual reality

The video shows the process of  a revit model being visualized within virtual reality using unity 3d in a very few steps. It is an elaborate tutorial of the project.Try them out with your models.

Virtual reality for navigation

Here, you can see a  virtual reality solution for AEC industry. It helps to literally walk through your renderings, add items and equipment and navigate large environments within the  MiniWorld using buttons on the user interface.

iDOME

This is an exploration done in iDOME few years back , to bring interactive immersive experience of a Krakow,Poland  through panoramic videos.
iDOME is a proprietry hardware/software platform developed by the iCinema Centre that offers a cost-effective and compact immersive visualisation environment for panoramic and spherical representations, video and/or computer generated. Ideally suited for museological applications, it is configured as a three to five meter fibreglass hemisphere that stands vertically in front of the viewer, with a projector, computer, surround audio equipment and user interface."

Editing object-propeties in virtual space

Technologies like kinect and leapmotion are being used nowadays to make user interaction and navigation more realistic through gestures, body movements and facial expressions. This video shows an interactive installation in which user navigates through a house with body movements and paints objects with gesture control. The system is running on Unity 3D engine, and it uses Kinect for skeleton and depth data.

Augmemted and mixed reality for 3d visualization

Various AR applications like Modus Matrix, Quadrum, BizPark27, Advice 3d, ARki, ImpactAR,Rosatom,3D Property Viewer, inreal3d, Jumping Rotterdam, Visuartech, Luminem etc have facilitated augmenting new and interesting details views on 2d interfaces bringing in new ways of visualizing , designing and prototyping. This has been done by embedding markers on the 2d surfaces.

Computer aided mixed reality has been used with pegs used as user controls rather than head mounted displays and hand movements. In most of these cases a connection is achieved between the real and virtual world and users can be part of the virtual world by editing the real.

Hololens and holographic projections are the new cool and if this technology is possible there can be multiple applications in navigation in virtual world in the future.Similarly, if virtual hangouts turns out to be the new social networking platforms like facebook and AltspaceVR are trying to do, then one can think of multiple possibilities of group collaboration and efficient visualisation of spaces as avatars in the virtual world itself.

Visualization through Social virtual reality

Here is a demo of what altspaceVR is trying to do building the cool social virtual world.

Taking cue from the above video in which the virtual avatars load a solar system around them, one can also load 3d spaces in to the virtual world and collectively experience the views and essence of the area. So, there is obviously a long way to play around in this field with lot of experiments and researches going on around us. Enjoy!!!
